Sport and inclusion in Sicily
Sport brings people together, breaks down barriers and truly transcends sight: in Sicily, it is also a means of autonomy, dignity, participation and inclusion.
In early November, FISPIC joined forces with the Regione Siciliana to promote inclusion through sport, focusing on people who are blind or visually impaired. The initiative unfolded across two cities, blending community engagement with high-level paralympic demonstrations.
The first event took place on 8 November in Terrasini under the title “Una mattina di sport per tutti” (A Morning of Sport for All). Local associations, athletes and citizens gathered to experience inclusive disciplines such as blind tennis and 5-a-side football for the visually impaired. Demonstrations were followed by hands-on activities, allowing participants to step into the world of adapted sport. The message was clear: accessibility is not charity, but opportunity.
That same weekend, the focus shifted to Caltanissetta, where the two-day event “Lo Sport oltre la vista” (Sport Beyond Sight) was hosted at the PalaMilan. Athletes from across Sicily competed and performed in disciplines including blind tennis, torball, showdown and judo. Exhibitions and mini-tournaments showcased not only technical excellence, but also the social value of sport as a space for autonomy, teamwork and mutual recognition.
Together, these events highlighted a simple but powerful idea: when institutions and communities invest in inclusive sport, they do more than organise competitions. They create environments where barriers dissolve, talent emerges, and inclusion becomes a lived experience rather than a slogan.
