Learning Through Sport: Beach Volleyball, Social-Emotional Learning and Inclusion in Barcelona

What happens when a beach volleyball game becomes more than just physical activity?

This summer, sport2live brought physical activity outside the usual training environment, taking participants from its programmes to the beach in Barcelona for a beach volleyball session.

Beyond enjoying sport in a different setting, the activity provided an opportunity to put into practice one of the core principles of Edu4Impact: using sport as a space for Social-Emotional Learning (SEL), personal development and social inclusion.

Edu4Impact promotes the use of sport as an educational tool to strengthen social and emotional skills and support professionals working with adults in vulnerable situations. Through physical activity, participants can experience situations that encourage communication, emotional awareness, cooperation, decision-making and relationship-building.

More than a game

Beach volleyball naturally creates situations in which participants need to interact, communicate and work together.

Keeping the ball in play requires cooperation. Players need to observe their teammates, adapt to changing situations, make quick decisions and manage both success and frustration.

In this context, sport becomes a practical learning environment.

Throughout the activity, participants had the opportunity to work on important social and emotional skills such as:

  • Self-awareness, recognising emotions, reactions and personal limits during physical activity.
  • Self-management, dealing with effort, frustration and unexpected situations.
  • Social awareness, paying attention to the needs and abilities of others.
  • Relationship skills, communicating, cooperating and supporting teammates.
  • Responsible decision-making, adapting actions and making choices as part of a group.

These are precisely the kinds of skills that Edu4Impact seeks to strengthen through the connection between sport and Social-Emotional Learning.

A different environment, new opportunities

Taking the activity to the beach also meant stepping outside the participants’ usual environment.

Changing the context can create new ways of relating to others, encourage participation and help people experience physical activity from a different perspective.

The informal and open setting of Barcelona’s beach offered an opportunity to enjoy movement, social interaction and teamwork while reinforcing a sense of belonging.

Rather than focusing on performance or competition, the value of the session came from participating, cooperating and sharing the experience.

This reflects an important principle behind Edu4Impact: sport can become a powerful tool for inclusion when the experience is designed not only around physical skills, but also around the personal and social development of those taking part.

From sport skills to life skills

The situations experienced during a volleyball game can also connect with everyday life.

Communicating with a teammate, adapting when something does not go as planned, managing frustration, supporting another person or working towards a shared objective are skills that extend far beyond the volleyball court.

Sport therefore provides a practical environment in which these abilities can be experienced rather than simply explained.

For sport2live, activities such as this summer beach volleyball session illustrate how physical activity can be transformed into an opportunity for learning, connection and personal growth.

For Edu4Impact, they also demonstrate something fundamental:

When sport is used intentionally, every activity can become an opportunity to learn, connect and create inclusion.
